"More importantly, we will again miss the opportunity for structural reforms." Liu proposed on Sunday a new round of structural reforms that could aid the economy immediately, while also injecting long-term growth momentum. Liu said on Sunday that China should give clearer recognition to private businesses' status, both ideologically and politically.

Real estate problems persist with once-healthy developer Country Garden now on the brink of default. Real estate dragChina's massive real estate sector, where the majority of household wealth is parked, has reemerged as an area of concern that it could drag down the broader economy. Developer Country Garden announced over the weekend it was suspending trading in at least 10 of its mainland-China traded yuan bonds. The more the government tries to help the real estate industry, the longer it takes for the industry to find a reasonable bottom. State-owned developers have also fared better in terms of recent sales than non-state-owned developers, data show.

Chinese stocks soared Tuesday as Beijing pledged to ramp up measures to bolster China's sputtering economy. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index surged more than 3%, China's tech-heavy ChiNext rose 1.8% and the Shanghai Composite Index increased 1.81% on Tuesday morning in Asia. The stock rebound comes after China's top leaders pledged on Monday to ramp up policy support to boost domestic consumption as the post Covid rebound has been slower than expected. That's mainly due to weak domestic demand, operational challenges for companies as well as "a grim and complex external environment," it said. Alibaba shares soared 4.7%, while Tencent was up nearly 4%.

Overnight the S&P 500 (.SPX) rose 0.7% to hit a three-month high, with results propelling bank shares. Morgan Stanley (MS.N), Bank of America (BAC.N) and Bank of New York Mellon (BK.N) shares rose sharply on strong results and an upbeat outlook overnight. Microsoft (MSFT.O) shares rose 4% - adding $100 billion in market value - after announcing charges for artificial intelligence features in its office software. British inflation data due at 0600 GMT is the next major calendar item and traders are expecting a fall to a still-uncomfortable 8.2% annual pace. "While annual headline inflation fell sharply, which is helpful for inflation expectations, the details suggest persistence in non-tradables inflation."

The company was co-founded by Jack Ma, as was e-commerce giant Alibaba Group (BABA). On Friday, Chinese financial regulators fined Ant and its subsidiaries a total of 7.1 billion yuan ($984 million) for breaking rules related to consumer protection and corporate governance. The fines mean the regulatory “overhang” over the Chinese internet sector has finally been removed, Jefferies analysts said Saturday. Chinese tech shares rallied Monday, with Alibaba rising 3.2% and Tencent gaining 0.7%. Friday’s fines mark the conclusion of the regulatory crackdown on Ant and could pave the way for the company to revive its long-anticipated IPO, according to analysts.

The latest drubbing in the world's biggest bond markets, which last year suffered a record rout, does not yet point to any dysfunction in the markets themselves, investors said. But in echoes of the volatile conditions seen during March's banking crisis, trading in euro zone benchmark German government bond futures were briefly interrupted on Thursday when bond yields spiked. U.S. and British 10-year yields were also set to end the week more than 20 bps higher , . ING said earlier on Friday that this week's data was strong enough to push yields higher even if jobs numbers interrupt the moves. "It won't be as bad as that, but higher rates and higher yields could lead to negative returns and pressure returns on equity markets."

Construction on a real estate development project gets underway near the Bund in Shanghai, China, on May 25, 2023. BEIJING — New data show China's massive property sector is still struggling to turn around, despite signs of recovery earlier this year. Beijing has eased its pressure on real estate developers in the last year, following a crackdown on their debt levels in August 2020. The property sector and related industries have accounted for more than a quarter of China's economy, according to Moody's estimates. Both weeks' sales volume was lower than during the same period in 2019, prior to the pandemic, the report said.

The peak recorded by the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau on Monday beat the previous May record of 35.7 degrees Celsius set in 1876, 1903, 1915 and 2018, according to bureau statistics. Earlier, many localities in Sichuan province, which is home to more than 80 million people, issued high-temperature warnings, with some areas maxing out at 42 degrees Celsius, local media reported. In the next three to five days, the maximum temperature in some cities in Sichuan, located in China's southwest, will reach 38 degrees Celsius, and hit 42 degrees Celsius in some areas, according to state media. China, known for extreme weather conditions, has also been experiencing torrential rains for weeks in some regions.
The German economy entered a technical recession in the first quarter of this year, as households tightened spending. Data from the German statistics office on Thursday showed a downward revision to GDP (gross domestic product) from zero to -0.3% for the first three months of the year. The European Central Bank is expected to raise rates again at its next meeting on June 15. German Central Bank Governor Joachim Nagel said earlier this week that the ECB has "several" more rate increases ahead. He is one of the most hawkish members of the central bank.
REUTERS/Ralph OrlowskiSINGAPORE, May 19 (Reuters) - Global shares rose to a one-month high and the dollar trounced major currencies on Friday as markets reflected increased hopes for a deal over the U.S. debt ceiling that could avoid a calamitous default. The moves came after Democratic negotiators told President Joe Biden they were making "steady progress" on a deal to lift the U.S. debt ceiling and avoid a default by the world's largest economy, whose currency and Treasury debt markets underpin global trade and investment. "It's a high risk but low probability event," said Kevin Thozet, investment committee member at European fund manager Carmignac, said of the debt ceiling. Debt ceiling relief complicates the outlook for U.S. government bonds, where yields broadly track Federal Reserve interest rates, as fading recession risk could prompt the world's most influential central bank to keep monetary policy tight as inflation remains high. Elsewhere in markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 (.N225) hit its highest since 1990, reflecting debt ceiling optimism as well as the fact global investors are returning to Japan as its economy and corporate governance improve.

Having firmly scaled-back rate expectations amid last month's market turmoil, investors no longer expect borrowing costs to stay higher for longer and are cautious about pricing in a deposit rate above 4%. The November 2023 ECB euro short-term rate (ESTR) forward rose to 3.65% on Wednesday, implying expectations for a deposit rate of around 3.75%. Citi meanwhile argued that the June ESTR or money market contract was less appealing from a hedging standpoint while markets were pricing a peak of 3.75%. bundfuturevolBut Bund futures volumes declined after March 15 as markets once more revised their rate expectations upwards. This means that the smaller the gap between the current benchmark rate and the expected rate, the lower the volatility, and vice versa.
Gold pulled back from near record highs as the dollar bounced and Fed Governor Christopher Waller added weight to the prospect of another rate hike, saying the central bank's lack of progress on slowing inflation meant rates needed to move higher. While the economic data suggests the U.S. economy is slowing and next month's expected rate hike may be its last, how long rates stay at the highest since the onset of the global financial crisis in 2007 is unclear. "The Fed is going to stay higher than it's forecast. The 10-year German bund's yield rose to 2.433%, helping the benchmark post its biggest weekly rise since late September. U.S. crude settled up 36 cents at $82.52 a barrel, while Brent rose 22 cents to settle at $86.31.
